Located in Fallbrook CA is a dream — the start of a new school focusing on classical sculpture and painting. And tonight, the NBC program Art Pulse will host a 30 minute show about pouring metal. You can watch it locally in San Diego on channels 7/39 on TV at 5 pm. Or if your like me and don’t have a TV, then you can watch it anytime on the computer after 5:30 pm. I recommend checking it–a good way to see what my new passion is.
As for the sculpture academy, Well it’s looking like it will happen — the first classes will start in Jan 2014. Tuition for the first year will be $13.5K (all supplies included) for a full time program–8 hours a day class and lab time. Small intensive classes focusing on skill development. Think about the art in Florence Italy developed under the Medici’s. Consider the work of artists like Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Donatello. The goal is to teach students how to become craftsmen and craftswomen able to create bronze statues like those great artists. So there is lots of training in anatomy, life drawing, and sculpting in different media. But the academy also has a working foundry. So the students get to learn some really practical skills as well — welding, basic foundry work, wood crafting.
And there is some very cheap housing available in fallbrook through the academy. A lot of money, but cheaper than the UC’s and other art schools. It is a certificate program with no accreditation. It turns out you can’t get accreditation without first having a graduate class. You can learn more about this academy at:

Wish I was young and able to attend this academy. It sounds like so much fun, something life changing. But instead I can dream and learn while working around the academy. And perhaps in a few years, I can have the coolest job — IT support and teaching students how to do 3D computer modeling, creating robots, programming, and adding exotic pyrotechnics and light shows to modern sculptures. In the meantime, I’m having fun.
