Glass of Beer on a Sunday Afternoon

About a year and a half ago, Bob, Maggie, and I spent a wonderful afternoon at the bar enjoying a beer.  I took pictures of the hands and then played with some image processing software.

Now, summer of 2015; painting those hands are one of my current projects. This is going to be a huge painting, 30×36 inches.  Artistic challenges: using big brushes, a limited palate, painting glass and reflections, using texture and brush strokes to suggest depth.  The following photos show you the original photo, a gray scale done in green, two sessions on the sweater and arms, and one session working on the table with a little bit of beer thrown into the  mix.

After four lessons and 1.5 months, have not yet finished.  And now I am on  my own for finishing this painting until September.  In August, there is a special saturday class series “plein aire painting”.  Three saturdays in a row, three different scenes, paintings need to be finished within the 2 hour block of time.  That will be challenging and fun.  We will see if I can work on this painting without help or not.  In the meantime, I want to go get a beer.

Welcome to my life. My life as a mom is changing as the kids grow up, leave home, and build their own lives. This gives me a chance to rebuild myself as an artist, develop a spiritual path, and most fun of all, start going out on dates with my husband. Come here the stories about the small things in life that can make one very happy. Dogs running on a beach, great breakfast dates, kids and their adventures, and my own adventures in this wacky life. I'll share some of my progress in learning art while juggling a full time job as an engineer. And best of all, it's a chance for me to practice writing stories while keeping in touch with my kids. I look forward to hearing from you. Comments, thoughts, and invitations to meet for coffee are all welcomed. Enjoy the stories.
