If Cats had Hands

Recently, I’ve been wondering what the cats would do if they had hands instead of paws. Actual hands with oposable thumbs that could grasp things. Retractable claws replace the fingernails, the dewclaw becomes the thumb. Questions abound like:
Would the cats be freaked out by this replacement?
How quickly would they adapt to hands?
How would the hands be created?
Is it likely the hands would develop through evolution?
Could you develop a gene to make it an inheritable condition?
Would the cats start becoming more intelligent because of the extra mental challenges?
Imagine not just a house cat with hands, but a massive lion with hands?

These hands probably would have to be created in a lab with genetic changes. I don’t think surgery is the answer alghough many miracles are possible with artificial limbs. And evolution does not seem to be favoring the development of hands. Magic might be possible, but not likely. I’ve not heard of anyone with the power to create hands that can either prove they have the skill or willingness to use that power. It would be kind of awesome to have the power of shape shifting, I’ll have to think about that as a super-power.

Liz laughs at me and says “Mom, why do you think about these kinds of things? Your the only person I know who asks these kinds of questions.” Bob agrees with me that Emily would start creating her own snacks. And if Sally learned how to open the cupboard, the beef jerky would disapear in a day. I don’t know what Sophia would do. She’s not food motivated in the same way as the other two cats. What she wants in unlimited attention with no distractions from anything or anyone else. So she probably would find new ways to get my attention including pulling my hair.

Well work calls, so I’ll have to muse in private about cats with hands. I do believe that they would develop more intelligence over several generations. It would be fascinating to watch. But maybe not, we’ve not managed to create teacup cats and really big house cats like we have with dogs. Perhaps there is something so innate about the nature of a cat which prevents it from changing. The immutable inscrutable cat, may they keep me amused and happy for many more years.
