Some Mondays are great, others chaotic, and then there are days like today. Nothing really bad, overall everything is just fine, but at points it did not seem like it.

Where to start–well Bob had the most dramatic day. He got home after several adventures. Started the day with a high school Guinea Pig lecture. The humane society has an outreach program with an education component; titled perseverance. Bob’s job was to walk around to different 3 classrooms with a guinea pig in a basket to let the kids pet it. They show a video about why to keep going and then taking care of animals — you can’t give up. Rough group of kids, lots of help needed. Pretty sobering.

For relaxation, dropped Kat at school after her dinner for band practice and went to the dog park. Lost the keys — thinks that one of the other dogs (a huge pack rushed past him) may have grabbed the string with the keys. Had to call his parents for a ride. Very embarrassing, they came and picked him up with the dog, took him home, he put Elle in the house, and then went back to retrieve his car. Just barely made it, the ranger was probably thinking about either locking the car in the park for the night or calling a tow truck. Furthermore, Elle got hurt at the park…playing roughly with a little white dog. She was limping around for a while, but seems to be fine now.

When I got home, Bob had not yet arrived from the park adventure. Elle had been given free access to the world through the living room cat door. But she was hungry or scared of the dark and thus was in the house when I arrived. We were lucky she did not decide to go wandering.

It was late, I had been working on stuff at my day job — the one that pays the bills. Boring stuff. Started this morning by spilling lunch all over my backpack at work. Ended the day by doing paperwork and cursing at non-working code. Well it does work, just not the way I need it. Work is ok, but what I want to do is create things — draw pictures, paint, sew, cook — do something that makes me and other people happy. What I do instead is write documentation no one wants to read, but they have to.

Was disappointed today by my VIFT assistants. They don’t have time to help with any extra tasks this year. And I had worked so hard last weekend finding some interesting easy tasks which offered some creative opportunities – helping pull together a video sales booth, pulling together photographs of the kids for sale, and examining ways to increase ticket sales. Each task was probably 5 hours, maybe 10 hours at the most to do. Well, I’ll have to put out a call for help from other parents instead. That becomes a task for tonight.

Heard from my mom today and other this weekend. No one I know saw the draconid meteor shower. It was cloudy in Albuquerque. It was foggy in Nevada City, CA. It was foggy in Vista. It was snowing in Ely, MN. Well next year. Actually there are two more chances for meteor showers this year. A co-worker was telling me how to take pictures and another one suggested a canyon that has a good black sky. Will need to check the calendar and might do this for the December shower.

Still have another couple hours to go before being off duty. Bob is cooking dinner for me, then we go to school, walk around the track, and pick up Kat. Check with one person about task status and then come home to write the email looking for more help. Not a great and fun day, but life certainly is interesting for everyone.

Welcome to my life. My life as a mom is changing as the kids grow up, leave home, and build their own lives. This gives me a chance to rebuild myself as an artist, develop a spiritual path, and most fun of all, start going out on dates with my husband. Come here the stories about the small things in life that can make one very happy. Dogs running on a beach, great breakfast dates, kids and their adventures, and my own adventures in this wacky life. I'll share some of my progress in learning art while juggling a full time job as an engineer. And best of all, it's a chance for me to practice writing stories while keeping in touch with my kids. I look forward to hearing from you. Comments, thoughts, and invitations to meet for coffee are all welcomed. Enjoy the stories.

  1. It’s life’s challenges that makes us grow and become stronger (and drives us mad!). Good work not going mad on Monday.
